Knitr

About Knitr

You fall for a pattern, then find out the yarn it calls for is sold out, not the right colour, or just not what's already in your stash. Or you've got eight skeins sitting in a basket at home and no idea what they could become. Either way, you end up doing math on the back of an envelope, guessing, and hoping you bought enough.

Knitr exists to help you with that math.

Underneath, Knitr is a growing database of yarns and patterns connected by gauge — the actual stitch and row count per 10cm. Gauge and fiber contents are what makes one yarn a real substitute for another, and it's what lets us tell you not just whether a yarn works, but how much of it you'd need to buy for your size.

Every number in Knitr comes from a yarn manufacturer's and a designer's own published specs. We don't fill in gaps with guesses, and if we can't verify a figure, we say so instead of making one up. Yarn amounts are always given as a calculated estimate.

We link to and credit every pattern designer and yarn brand rather than reproducing their work, out of respect, and because we aim to provide a useful service.

Knitr is built by a knitter, for knitters.

What's live already

  • Search yarns by name, brand, fibre or gauge
  • Every yarn page shows honest, gauge-anchored substitutes
  • Pattern pages show which yarns in the library actually work for that pattern
  • Available in English and Czech

What's coming next

  • More pattern sources, so more patterns get matched to real yarn
  • A calculator to recompute how much yarn you need if your gauge or size differs from the pattern
  • A way to add a yarn yourself if it's missing from the library

Recently added
